This long term project explores the edge of the U.S. at the end of Route 66 and Santa Monica Pier, where the great American journey west culminates. Documenting California beach life, it looks at what the American west means in an age of political turbulence. In a country whose identity has been reshaped since Sarah started the project in 2015, the beach is somewhere that stays much the same. This project is about tender, human moments, that divide, rather than unite, in a place where people and cultures meet. Sarah knows and loves California and became increasingly fascinated with this area; its bright light and sense of a better, happier moment or life in the sun.
